Ditch the plastic and go fantastic

BAG a News and Mail reusable shopping carryall and do your bit for the planet.
Not only does this 100% cotton bag make you hot to shop, it could also help reduce the countless plastic bags Woking sends to landfill every year.
The time has come to ditch plastic bags — of which around 13billion are used in Britain a year — and opt for a sustainable alternative.
But our push to purge plastic shopping bags from Woking’s bins does not mean we cannot still shop in style.
The News and Mail shopper is just one of a range of cool shopping companions that can put the chic into the weekly shop.

Produced in partnership with Surrey County Council, our “fantastic not plastic” shopping bags are available free by redeeming the coupon on this page at our office.

These completely natural, biodegradable cotton bags are durable and can be used time and time again.

The aim is to cut down on the numbers of plastic carrier bags we are all guilty of unnecessarily using when we go shopping.

Elaine Tantram, waste minimisation officer for the council, said: “Not accepting a plastic bag is something that’s very easy to do and something that everyone can do.”

Rolser

This pop art product from Rolser is just one of a range of novel designs that help put a bit of bling into your shopping.

Proving that shopping trolleys are not just for those who have passed over the hill, the company offers a range of bright contemporary designs for its range of trolleys and reusable bags.

Anya Hindmarch

Fashion designer Anya Hindmarch made green the new black when she designed this reusable shopping bag for Sainsbury’s.

The bags reached cult status when they became the goodie bag of choice for guests at the Vanity Fair Oscar Night Party earlier this year.

Stars including Amy Winehouse and Keira Knightley have been snapped with the bags, proving that being eco-friendly is now officially fashionable among the young and hip.

Only 20,000 of the bags were made and each Sainsbury’s store was allotted 30 that went for £5 each. They later fetched prices of more than £200 on eBay.

Wayne Hemmingway

This 100% jute shopping bag proves that the ecologically aware have moved on from the days of dreadlocks and hole-riddled woolly jumpers.

Designed by Wayne Hemmingway — the scion of style behind London brand Red or Dead — the bag is said to be both fashionable and durable.

Jute — also known as hessian — is a plant fibre that can be woven to form anything from rope to rugs or curtains to clothes. It is the second most widely produced fabric material after cotton in the world.

String bags

A range of string bags can be found on the Internet, offering shoppers a shopping solution that scrunches up easily in the pocket for storage.

Bags like this are said to be ideal for carrying fruit and vegetables and can bear much heavier weights than their plastic cousins.

This one made is made from 100% cotton and is available by logging on to www.guardianecostore.co.uk.

Cement bags

These bags are not just brimming with green credentials, they are also ethically-sourced from a women’s co-operative in Bangladesh.

The recycled cement bags are lined with unbleached cotton and fitted with a zipped inner pocket.
