Local election results in Surrey

SIX councils in Surrey have had elections, and the winning candidates and runners-up in each ward (and the number of votes they received) can be found listed below, alongside details of what the results mean for the political make-up of each local authority. All the councils had a third of their seats up for election.

Key to candidates' political affiliation:
BNP = British National Party
Con = Conservatives
Green = Green Party
Ind = Independent
Lab = Labour
Lib Dem = Liberal Democrats
RA = Residents' Association
UKIP = UK Independence Party

ELMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL (click here for full results on council's website)

The council has gone from 'no overall control' to being controlled by the Conservative Party. The Tories have gained four seats - in Hersham North, Long Ditton, Walton Central and Walton North - and now have a total of 32 councillors. The borough's various residents' associations have three fewer councillors as a result (down to 21), with the Liberal Democrat presence in the council chamber falling from eight members to seven.

The political structure of the council has not changed, but the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats have swapped two seats. The Tories took Westcott from the Lib Dems, but Leatherhead North went the other way. The Conservatives therefore still hold power with 22 councillors, compared to 16 Lib Dems and three Ashtead Independents.

The council is still led by the Tories but they now have 39 seats instead of 41 after losing one to an Independent candidate and another to the Liberal Democrats. So as well as the Conservative majority in the council chamber, there are now two Independent councillors, three Lib Dems, one from Labour and six Residents’ Association members.

It is a case of "as you were" in Runnymede with none of the seats being contested changing hands. The Conservatives have held on in 12 of the wards with elections taking place, while the Runnymede Independent Residents' Group continues to hold sway with the voters in Egham Town and Thorpe. The council's political balance remains at 36 Tories and six Independent councillors.

The Conservatives are still in charge of the council, and they now have two more councillors than they did before the polls opened. The Tories won Queens Park and Warlingham East, Chelsham & Farleigh from the Liberal Democrats, as well as Valley from Independent councillor Peter Longhurst, but they did lose Westway to the Lib Dems.

The Conservatives have retained power in the council chamber after a spot of election swapping with the Liberal Democrats. The Tories took seats in Brookwood and Horsell West from the Lib Dems, but they lost councillors in Knaphill and Maybury & Sheerwater. The end result though is that the parties have still got the same number of council members as before - 19 and 17 respectively.
