Edward Albert Jackman, of Selbourne Avenue, New Haw, died in St Peter’s Hospital, aged 88.

Ted, as he was known, was a sergeant in the Paratroopers in the Second World War, being part of the 1st British Airborne Division. He saw action in north Africa before being parachuted into Holland where, with his unit, the 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment, he marched into Arnhem and took part in the battle for Arnhem bridge.

He was among the last few British soldiers who, although cut off, defended the bridge before finally being taken as a prisoner of war by the Germans.

He was mentioned in the book Arnhem Spearhead written by James Sims.

Ted, who leaves two daughters, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, fell and broke his hip on New Year’s Eve and was admitted to St Peter’s where he failed to make a recovery and died on February 22.

His funeral will be tomorrow (Friday) at Woking crematorium.
