John and Lillian Bishop were married for 58 years.

HUNDREDS of people turned out to celebrate the life of a man who gave much to his community.

It was standing room only at Trinity Methodist Church in Brewery Road, Woking, for the funeral of John Bishop, a former reverend at the church.

Mr Bishop died on April 14, aged 88 and his funeral was on Friday April 25. He was born in Yorkshire and spent most of his childhood in Bolton, where he met his wife Lillian.

During his life as a Methodist minister, he was appointed to five circuits and retired from Trinity Methodist 23 years ago.

Despite his retirement, he remained living in Woking and the couple was involved in the community, with Mr Bishop being a member of the Epworth Choir for many years.

Mr and Mrs Bishop celebrated 58 years of marriage, although they had no children, before she passed away last year.

Wendy Enderby, who knew the couple, said: “They were a devoted couple who lived for each other and he only lived a year after the death of his beloved wife.”
